Overcoming Anxiety Group
Overcoming Anxiety: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy & Mindfulness Group

Welcome and thank you for your interest in our group, Overcoming Anxiety: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Mindfulness! Anxiety can be frustrating, overwhelming, and can make it hard to be content and enjoy life. Through this group, you will learn a variety of techniques that have been proven to reduce anxious thoughts, feelings and behaviors. Our hope is that through this group, participants will: 1) have the chance to build relationships with other people who understand their struggle with anxiety; and 2) will develop new skills that they can use to address anxiety long after this group is over. Please see below for answers to some commonly asked questions. We are happy to answer any additional questions you may have!
What topics will we cover in this group?
This group will focus on helping group members understand how their thoughts contribute to their anxiety and how this process can be modified to reduce anxiety. Group members will learn new skills to help address their anxiety. These skills will include both cognitive and mindfulness techniques.
What is the format and structure of this group?
This group will meet every Saturday morning for 6 Saturdays. The first Saturday will be longer (2.5 hours) so that everyone has a chance to relax, enjoy some breakfast, get to know each other and to understand more about the group content and group process. The remaining 5 Saturday mornings will be 1.5 hours each.
Each time we meet, we will spend a little time learning new cognitive and mindfulness techniques in a larger group. Then we will break up into two smaller groups to process the information and share with one another. This will give everyone an opportunity to share and connect with others on a more intimate level.
Below are the specific dates and times of each group session:
-
Saturday, September 7, 2019: 9:15am-11:45am
-
Saturday, September 14, 2019: 9:15am-10:45am
-
Saturday, September 21, 2019: 9:15am-10:45am
-
Saturday, September 28, 2019: 9:15am-10:45am
-
Saturday, October 5, 2019: 9:15am-10:45am
-
Saturday, October 12, 2019: 9:15am-10:45am
This group will be led by two experienced and licensed psychotherapists (please see below for details about us). This group will be a closed-group, which means that the same group members who start this 6-week group will be included and will finish the group together. This is different than the way open-groups are run, in which new members can start each week. One of the benefits of a closed-group is that group members are able to build rapport and intimacy over the series of sessions because they have all participated in the same group together over the group therapy period.
What is the commitment and cost for this group?
The group will run for a 6-week period between September 7th, 2019 and October 12th, 2019. The cost for the group is $50 per session ($300 for 6 sessions). Attendance is critical for group cohesion. When group members miss group sessions, it can have a negative impact on the group dynamic. In order to ensure that everyone gets the most out of the group, it is important that all group members attend all 6 sessions. Also, we only have a specific number of slots available and anyone who misses sessions is taking away from others who could have been a part of the group. To encourage commitment and participation so that everyone gets the most out of the group, we require all group members keep a credit card on file. Each week, group members will be charged the $50 weekly fee for the group, even if they do not attend the group that week. We also require your credit card information and a $50 non-refundable deposit to hold your place in the group. The $50 deposit will be used to pay for your first week in the group.
What is included in the cost of the group?
-
10 hours of therapy (2.5 hours the first Saturday and 1.5 hours for each subsequent Saturday)
-
Psychoeducational mini-lectures/demonstrations about cognitive therapy and mindfulness techniques
-
Cognitive therapy handouts and literature
-
Mindfulness handouts and literature
-
Breakfast, coffee and tea provided the first Saturday
-
Refreshments, coffee and tea provided all remaining Saturdays
Where will this group be held?
